The project is a renovation of two 952-square-foot undergraduate chemistry teaching labs, upgraded restrooms on the floor to meet ADA guidelines, and updated elevator lobby finishes. The project aimed to create safe, modern teaching labs that facilitate and promote active learning.

As the labs were currently organized and designed, they do not meet the current or future needs of the chemistry department program. The spaces lack flexibility, efficiency, modern technology, and potentially unsafe working stations.

The proposed design for the laboratory spaces focused on providing flexible spaces to accommodate the activities within. The “workspace” is located on the perimeter, and the “collaborative” space is centralized in the room for future flexibility. The new interior windows into the labs promote visibility and create a showcase for the college. Additionally, the HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety are updated in the room as part of the renovation with connections to the existing base building system. These two lab renovations are the first in the building and will set a precedent for future renovations.
