Spectrum Health (formerly Lakeland Health) has a vision of becoming a regional referral center, a vision reinforced with a new 144-bed inpatient tower. Prior to facility design, Spectrum required the planning services of BSA LifeStructures to provide a definition of project scope, schematic design, and an updated master facility plan.
As a Pebble Partner, the hospital requested an evidence-based design approach that focused on creating a healing environment. The existing master plan was updated through a process that included a literature search, hospital tours, a study of hospital satisfaction scores and facility benchmarks – LifeStructures Metrics®. A series of operational and facility metrics were identified to measure design success. Metrics are reported quarterly and annually as part of the pre- and post-occupancy evaluation process.
A scope definition study revealed the need for additional components. These components included the addition of more beds, a parking deck, a customer service center, restructured utilities and modernized site amenities.
