Various workspace options in a modern office featuring multiple privacy solutions. On the left, a person with blonde hair in black clothing works on a laptop within a pod-like enclosure with gray checkered interior backing and yellow cushioning, designed for focus work with sound absorption. In the foreground, a small round white table with wooden chairs offers a casual meeting spot. To the right, individual workstations with white and gray privacy screens provide semi-private desk areas with ergonomic chairs. Large windows reveal city views, and blue patterned carpeting continues the color scheme seen throughout the space. The design showcases different levels of privacy and work preferences in a post-pandemic flexible office environment, from fully enclosed pods for concentration to semi-private workstations and collaborative areas.
Open office layout featuring multiple work zones with a consistent blue and white color scheme. On the left, a person in a green shirt works on a laptop in a semi-private blue booth with high backs that provide acoustic privacy while remaining open to the environment. In the center walkway, a person in black clothing walks toward the back of the office. To the right, a person in a light blue shirt checks their phone while standing at a counter area, adjacent to a row of white storage lockers with numbered locks. The space features modern circular pendant lighting, large windows with city views, and blue patterned carpeting. The design demonstrates post-pandemic workplace solutions that combine personal storage options with various semi-private work areas while maintaining an open, collaborative atmosphere.
Separated from the rest of the space by a decorative gray panel with geometric cutouts that allow light to pass through is a standing-height workspace where three people sit on bar-height chairs. They are all looking at a monitor on the end of the table. Large windows provide natural light and city views throughout the space. The design showcases collaborative seating, consistent with post-pandemic flexible office environments. Blue is used as a unifying design element in wall accents, furniture, and carpeting.

Rethinking the Post-Pandemic Workplace: Children’s Mercy + BSA

BSA embarked on with Children’s Mercy to find the ideal solution for a reimagined post-pandemic work environment. Beginning in October 2020, BSA collaborated with key stakeholders to create a future-forward, hybrid workplace strategy tailored to evolving job functions and new ways of working—remote, on-site, or hybrid.

Leveraging survey data collected by Children’s Mercy, BSA conducted a detailed space utilization analysis to explore the long-term impact on leased office space. The findings were transformational: after meeting with leaders from 17 hospital departments to reevaluate job roles, BSA determined that post-pandemic space needs at Crown Center could be reduced from 250,000 square feet to just 60,000—a 76% reduction.

Custom Office Design to Support Hybrid Work

Then, BSA worked with Children’s Mercy to establish new standards for employees. We redesigned office floors to group departments with shared functional needs—such as classrooms or media production spaces. Additionally, we downsized stand offices to create more flexible collaboration areas, shared workstations, and adaptable layouts that support hybrid schedules.

During Q4 of 2021, Children’s Mercy launched a beta testing program. Over a three-month period, departmental teams rotated weekly through the newly designed office space. This allowed employees to experience the reimagined workplace environment and provide real-time, measurable feedback.

To support the evaluation, BSA developed a targeted survey in collaboration with Children’s Mercy. For example, carefully crafted questions assessed whether the new post-pandemic workplace met key performance goals—such as efficiency, comfort, and collaboration. Finally, the surveys identified areas for refinement ahead of a full-scale implementation.
