The Major Health Partners replacement hospital, the MHP Medical Center, is a state-of-the-art design. The MHP Medical Center’s renovation prioritized flexibility, patient-centered care, staff efficiency, and improved medical outcomes. As one of the first post-Affordable Care Act facilities completed in the United States, this project exemplifies BSA’s leading firm expertise in custom hospital planning.
Paying Tribute to the Major Family
The hospital’s history dates back to 1890 when the original Major Hospital was built as the Major Family’s home. Some time later, the family donated the mansion to serve as Shelby County’s first hospital. Mrs. Major, originally planning to donate the home after her passing, chose instead to witness its transformation into a healthcare facility. She lived in the hospital, greeting guests from her rocking chair in the parlor. BSA’s interior designers paid tribute to this rich history by incorporating interior renovation elements that honor its past.
Mrs. Major’s iconic rocking chair is on prominent display in the Major Health Partners replacement hospital’s main lobby. Additionally, a salvaged stone arch structure from the original mansion is now a striking feature in the entry vestibule. Designers artistically transformed architectural photography from the original hospital into graphic wall coverings, glass installations, and artwork. The result: A a seamless blend of history and modernity in this healthcare interior design.
Patient-Center Design
With an emphasis on patient experience, the hospital’s design to enhances comfort and efficiency. The facility primarily focuses on outpatient services while offering a limited number of inpatient services. Key features include an emergency department, imaging, surgery, birthing center, ICU, medical-surgical unit, and post-surgical unit. One unique space is the heart of the hospital, the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC). The ACC is an outpatient area that serves a few important purposes: improving patient flow, decreasing the time patients are waiting for care, and ultimately improving the patient experience. The center acts as a holding area for those who may not need to be admitted but still need time for observation and care. This concept reduces patient flow congestion in the emergency department and makes emergency department exam rooms available for additional patients that require emergency care. This area can also be used for patients scheduled for infusions or other similar outpatient treatments. Finally, the third floor inpatient unit features a central bath, spa, and massage room. The MHP Medical Center integrates their services with a human-centered approach, while incorporating the personal touch of addressing the aging population of their community.
