This is a photograph of a modern institutional building, the Luddy Center for Artificial Intelligence. The structure features a contemporary design with a cream/beige exterior façade of precast concrete panels and large glass windows. The building is three to four stories tall with a distinctive stepped design and geometric architectural elements. There's an entrance with stairs and accessible ramps at the corner of the building. The facility is situated on a sloped site with newly landscaped areas visible around the perimeter. The photograph was taken on a day with blue skies and white clouds, highlighting the clean lines and institutional modern aesthetic of this academic or research facility.
This image shows a modern workspace inside the Luddy Center for Artificial Intelligence. The room features eight workstations in a cubicle formation in the center of the room, each individual station having an
This image shows a modern reception area for the Luddy Center for Artificial Intelligence. The light oak reception desk stands out amongst the rest of space because behind it is a bright red wall while the rest of the walls are neutral-colored and minimalistic. There is a single elevator to the left of the reception desk. A woman is seated behind the reception desk and talking to a man, likely checking him into the building or providing directions. There is a modern red bench in the lobby, complementing the red accent wall. The space has contemporary design elements including recessed linear lighting, a drop ceiling, polished floors, and no decorations aside from one plant on the reception desk.
This image shows a modern collaboration space or break room inside the Luddy Center for Artificial Intelligence. The room features a small kitchenette on the right side with light oak cabinets, white countertops, and an island bar with white chairs. At the very front of the image is a table made of the same light oak with red chairs, possibly an area for lunch or open meetings. In the background are more configurations of beige accent chairs and grey tables with matching grey chairs. The space has contemporary design elements including recessed linear lighting, polished concrete floors, and clean neutral-colored walls.
This image shows the interior of a parking garage structure, likely associated with the Luddy Center or nearby facilities. The parking area features exposed concrete beams and ceilings with fluorescent lighting fixtures running along the ceiling. The space appears mostly empty, with clear directional signage visible including a green
This image shows the exterior of a parking garage structure connected to the Luddy Center. The structure features a contemporary design with a cream/beige exterior façade of precast concrete panels and large glass windows. There is a clear entrance and exit to the garage with a clearance height indicator (7') and barrier arm gates that lift for entry and exit, indicating that this lot is monitored. Next to the entrance and exit are ample bike racks, hinting that many people who utilize this building commute by bike. The photograph was taken on a day with blue skies and white clouds, highlighting the clean lines and institutional modern aesthetic of this academic or research facility.

The Luddy Center for Artificial Intelligence serves as the new home for Indiana University’s School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. This state-of-the-art facility is the epicenter of the university’s artificial intelligence (AI) research initiatives. Additionally, Luddy Center has a strong emphasis on machine learning and advanced computational methods. Designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, the building brings together students, faculty, and staff in a dynamic environment that promotes innovation in both teaching and research.

A major focus of the Luddy Center is digital health. The facility supports close partnerships with Indiana University’s robust network of health and life sciences programs located on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses. Within the center, researchers explore a broad spectrum of approaches to artificial systems. Specifically, they research the development of machines that can replicate intelligent human behavior and engage meaningfully with their environment.

BSA provided comprehensive architectural and engineering design services for the Luddy Center. Our designers worked closely with university stakeholders to create a space that embodies the school’s mission and vision. The design integrates highly adaptable spaces and cutting-edge technologies to support groundbreaking computational research.

Key features of the Luddy Center include high-performance computational research laboratories, flexible classrooms, modern office areas, collaboration and social hubs, open and private workspaces, advanced conference rooms, and a 376-car parking garage equipped with electric vehicle charging stations. The limestone exterior was carefully selected to harmonize with Indiana University’s iconic campus architecture.
