BSA LifeStructures and its aviation affiliate (Aviation Capital Management LLC) served as the Owner’s Technical Representative since 1999. The project consists of a two-square-mile site area that includes a new terminal building with two connected concourses serving 40 aircraft gates, a replacement air traffic control tower and 17,700 parking spaces served by a new airport parkway entering from a new intersection.

This involved relocating a large section of a nearby highway. The new 1,260,000-square-foot terminal includes the fully integrated Airport Management System with biometric security, a large central concessions court that serves as both a display area and a central meeting-greeting hall, and a fully automated baggage handling system (with capacity for 100 percent baggage screening). A well coordinated arts program is an important feature of the project.

A vast utility infrastructure system is required to provide drainage and the project includes a service tunnel under the north parallel runway, which connects to an existing power plant. Storm water quality was an important goal for the entire project. The Midfield Terminal was the first LEED certified terminal in the United States.
