Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI) harnesses the power of bioscience to explore complex disease processes and uncover breakthrough discoveries aimed at defeating disease. Driven by their mission—Discovery with Purpose—IBRI fuels innovation through strategic collaboration. BSA designed and engineered IBRI’s new headquarters and state-of-the-art research laboratories. Even more, the new facility is located in the emerging 16 Tech innovation district northwest of downtown Indianapolis. Reflecting the cutting-edge work within, both the building’s exterior and interior were thoughtfully crafted to embody the spirit of innovation.
Every BSA design project begins with an inclusive visioning session with client stakeholders. Firstly, BSA architects, designers, and engineers met with key IBRI personnel and subject matter experts to identify critical success factors, pain points, and goals and visions for the space.
A core theme of the IBRI project was creating a collaborative, flexible environment for evolving life sciences research. Flexibility within laboratory spaces was essential to accommodate shifting research needs, while adaptable meeting and conference areas were also a key client priority. BSA’s design focused on seamless integration and connectivity between laboratories, offices, and shared spaces to support equipment needs and workflow efficiency. Additionally, these interconnected spaces foster collaboration and encourage informal interaction among occupants. Equally important was the client’s vision for visual transparency and a strong connection between the building’s interior and the outdoors. IBRI aimed to establish a vibrant hub of innovation—an inviting space for partners, collaborators, tenants, and the broader community.
Future Ready Design
BSA’s lab design gives the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute exceptional flexibility to adapt layouts and operations as research trends evolve. This adaptability allows changes without major renovations, supporting the fast pace of applied life sciences research. Achieving these design goals empowers IBRI to follow the science and pivot quickly as needed.
The building’s modern design and advanced technology, combined with its location in 16 Tech, offer a strategic advantage. IBRI is well-positioned to attract top talent, foster collaboration, and expand its mission. Accordingly, the space immerses the organization in a thriving innovation ecosystem focused on improving human health for all.
Bob Coy, President and CEO of the 16 Tech Community Corporation said, “Building One will be home to researchers, entrepreneurs and advanced industry leaders in tech, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, ag-bioscience and talent development. These tenants represent the ideal cross-section of industry expertise and entrepreneurial energy that will drive innovation in Indiana’s economy.”
