Innovative Medical Pavilion: Sustainable Architecture, Interior Design & Engineering

BSA provided comprehensive engineering and design services for this state-of-the-art, eight story medical office building. The Swedish Hospital Foster Medical Pavilion’s design supports healthcare excellence and sustainability. As a leading healthcare engineering firm, BSA designed the facility to achieve LEED Gold Certification, incorporating energy-efficient healthcare solutions, sustainable building design, and low-maintenance operations to minimize long-term costs and environmental impact.

This modern outpatient facility serves as a hub for comprehensive care. The facility offers physician office space for 30 new doctors, a surgery center, a pharmacy, a restaurant, and an integrated 260-space parking structure that blends into the medical building design. Additionally, there are specialty clinics for:

  • Orthopedics
  • Pediatrics
  • Neurology
  • Thoracic care
  • Podiatry
  • Pain management
  • Urology

Finally, the ambulatory surgery center, operated by the hospital and a major physician group affiliated with Swedish Covenant, is occupied through a joint venture between hospital leadership and physicians. Now, not only can all of these clinics can operate in one convenient Chicago-area location, but this location prioritizes patient ease and accessibility.

While integrating hospital renovation principles and healthcare interior design services, BSA ensured the Swedish Hospital Foster Medical Pavilion balances modern aesthetics with advanced functionality. At the same time, thoughtful interior architecture promotes workflow optimization, comfort, and a patient-centered atmosphere.

Engineering Excellence for Sustainable Healthcare

As a top-rated healthcare engineering firm, BSA played a critical role in optimizing MEP building solutions and hospital system design to enhance operational efficiency. Comprehensive energy modeling ensured peak performance, while advanced metering systems allow for real time monitoring of energy and water consumption, both total and by system. These sustainable hospital design features reinforce BSA’s commitment to integrated healthcare solutions, energy-efficient healthcare, and sustainable building design.

As a result of BSA’s expertise, energy-efficient features include:

  • LEED Gold Certified
  • Variable speed heat recovery chiller
  • Condensing hot water boilers
  • 20% energy savings over ASHRAE 90.1-2007
  • Automatic light control systems
  • Variable flow chilled water system
