Custom Building Design for Eskenazi Health Administrative Campus

To support the expansion of its new campus, Eskenazi Health partnered with BSA, a leading architecture and engineering firm, for a custom building design of a separate facility for administrative and support services. Specifically, Eskenazi needed new structure to connect with—but remain distinct from—the hospital’s primary operations, offering a calmer and more focused work environment.

BSA’s team of design architects collaborated with over 40 administrative user groups to understand needs, define space, and optimize function. In addition, BSA prioritized eliminating enclosed offices to foster collaboration, integrating flexible floor plans that support evolving departmental demands. Natural light and exterior views shaped the core of the design strategy, enhancing staff wellness and productivity.

The open-office concept organizes departments into intimate “neighborhoods” of workstations surrounded by meeting and support spaces. This approach encourages connection and transparency. Using open-plan furniture and avoiding fixed partitions allows the layout to adapt over time.

The building’s U-shaped floor plans maximizes daylight access, with many areas benefiting from dual-directional light. Departments within include IT, finance, HR, legal services, medical staff offices, and public affairs.

Support features such as clinical simulation labs, staff training rooms, employee wellness spaces, and occupational health areas further enhance the work environment. Even more, a retail zone on the ground floor offers a branch bank and multiple dining options (plus a coffee shop!), supporting both staff and visitors.

Finally, key features implemented by our top engineers include:

  • Variable flow heating and cooling water systems
  • Water side heat recovery loops in AHUs
  • CO2 monitored and controlled outdoor air delivery
  • LEED Silver Certification
  • 21% energy savings over ASHRAE 90.1-2004
