In partnership with SpawGlass, BSA played a critical role in one of The University of Texas at Austin’s most ambitious recent projects: the design-build demolition of the iconic Frank Erwin Center and adjacent Denton Cooley Pavilion. This complex undertaking demanded extraordinary precision, innovation, and collaboration. Not only is the site located within a bustling campus, but it is also just steps from Interstate 35.

A Landmark’s Legacy and a New Beginning

The Frank Erwin Center had been a landmark for decades, hosting countless cultural, academic, and athletic events. Respecting its history, its demolition was not simply about removing a structure. Rather, it was about preparing a site critical to the university’s future. The demolition made way for the expansion of Dell Medical School in collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center.

A Strategic, Safety-First Approach to Demolition

Recognizing the inherent challenges, BSA and SpawGlass developed a deliberate, highly strategic approach. We ruled out traditional implosion early due to safety risks and proximity to major infrastructure. Instead, the team executed a meticulous manual deconstruction plan, prioritizing environmental stewardship and public safety. This method allowed for the careful removal and recycling of approximately 80% of materials. This achievement underscores our shared commitment to sustainable practices.

Beyond building removal, our scope encompassed decommissioning complex utilities—while maintaining essential services like the iconic IH-35 marquee sign—establishing rigorous site security, and implementing advanced environmental controls. As the final phase, we regraded the site for proper stormwater management and applied hydro-mulch treatment to create a stabilized greenfield, ensuring the site’s readiness for its next chapter.

A Showcase of Expertise and Collaboration

The careful dismantling of such a large and beloved facility, while maintaining critical infrastructure and minimizing disruption to campus life, reflects the type of multifaceted challenge that BSA is uniquely equipped to handle. It stands as a showcase project for the power of thoughtful design-build collaboration in advancing campus transformation.
