To expand its footprint in Indianapolis and lead the biologics revolution transforming modern medicine, Cook Medical partnered with BSA, a top-rated architecture, engineering, and interior design firm, to reimagine its existing facility built in 2012. The goal: attract world-class scientists and accelerate cutting-edge biomedical research in the region.

The Cook Medical project is a strategic interior renovation and expansion of an existing warehouse. Rather than constructing a separate facility, BSA architecture and engineering teams recommended expanding within the current footprint. This ensured efficient use of space and resources.

After conducting a comprehensive master plan, Phase 1 involved creating a new two-story mezzanine and renovating the existing first-floor into collaborative office environments. BSA removed portions of the northeast and southeast exterior walls, replacing them with a sleek aluminum and glass curtain wall. Consequently, these additions enhance natural light and modernize the building’s aesthetic.

Phase 2 focused on significant upgrades to the building envelope, including energy-efficient healthcare solutions. Additionally, Phase 2 also featured site and landscape design improvements that align with the innovation-driven atmosphere of 16 Tech.

Located within 16 Tech, Indianapolis’ 60-acre innovation district, the facility is surrounded by a thriving community of research labs, makerspaces, and green spaces designed to foster collaboration. The renovated warehouse includes 14,140 SF of updated lab and office space and 8,371 SF of new construction. The total exterior enhancements cover 45,165 SF.

In conclusion, this research facility design of Cook Medical exemplifies BSA’s commitment to creating sustainable, flexible, and high-performance environments for the life sciences and biotech sectors.
