Indiana University Health Pathology Laboratory
Lab consolidation improves operations
Rising from the north end of the downtown Indianapolis life sciences district is a clinical lab facility that combines the functions of several nearby IU Health hospitals. The Indiana University Health Pathology Laboratory includes three stories of labs and offices that sit atop a three-story parking facility. The lab expands laboratory facilities, includes the latest in automated equipment, consolidates millions of annual tests, and fosters a collaborative work space for over 450 clinical laboratory scientists and staff. The tracks of the attached People Mover, a pneumatic tube system—the largest of its kind in the U.S.—delivers blood and specimen samples from the three downtown hospitals to the 24/7 laboratory.
Since opening in 2006, the efficiency created by the Pathology Laboratory has allowed IU Health to raise their test volume by 28% to 11.5 million tests annually. The project has received numerous design awards, including the Grand Award for the American Council of Engineering Companies
