Cary Hospital Vertical Expansion
Patient safety and evidence-based design drive complex inpatient addition
This two-floor vertical expansion at WakeMed Cary Hospital adds private patient rooms with 42 additional inpatient beds in the medical/surgical unit and 40 replacement inpatient beds in intensive care, step down and medical units.
Patient safety and evidence-based design were key drivers for this project. The facility uses identical, same-handed patient rooms, which have been shown to reduce errors. The design process involved constructing a mock-up patient room to test the design. Inspired by direction from the hospital users, the design enriches the exterior, adding color and texture while maintaining a connection to the existing hospital.
